Hi audio friends,Ā
Iām doing something a bit different today. For the past six weeks Iāve been working on a new audio project ā building out the idea, gathering tape, structuring, scripting, receiving feedbackā¦ And ironically, Iāve been listening to more music than podcasts.
So I wanted to share a few of my favourite artists at the minute ā stuff thatās made me think differently about sound and sound design, or is just a great accompaniment to writing.
(Note: most of this stuff is electronic and/or house-adjacent because thatās my jam! Also: highly recommend the Flow State newsletter for work-music recos.)
Four Tet is probably my favourite producer. His work is a mix of dreamy, meditative soundscapes and just absolute bangers. For me Four Tet articulates something beyond words, and he got me through the pandemic.Ā
š§ New Energy and Sixteen Oceans
Jon Hopkins makes these lush, vivid tracks with piercing melodies and pulsing basslines. He spoke about his process in this Song Exploder ep. Aside: I canāt even think about how good he is live, because it physically hurts.Ā
š§ Immunity and Singularity
Kelly Lee Owens is a cancer ward nurse turned musician from Wales. These days sheās making what she calls āclimate change bangersā and theyāre a thing of beauty.Ā
š§ Kelly Lee Owens and Inner Song
Domenique Dumont is a Latvian producer making just very delightful songs. Theyāre whimsical and playful and make for a lovely companion to working.
š§ People On Sunday
š„ Bonus playlist recos! Spotifyās Music for Plants is a lovely calming listen. No idea why itās called that, but it works. Refractions and Brain Food are a bit more up-tempo.Ā
Iād love to hear what youāre listening to while you work! Get me on Twitter,Ā email or in the comments.
